Foundation Offers Massive Prize for Technique that Might Render Spays and Neuters Unnecessary
Anyone who has ever used treats or praise to train a canine companion knows that dogs respond to incentives. I’m sure you’re aware from your own experience that humans do, too. For many of us, one of the greatest incentives is money, which is being used to inspire us to find a solution to one of the most intractable problems for dogs, cats, and the people who care about them: canine and feline overpopulation. Could potentially dangerous surgery become a thing of the Read More...
Why does my dog eat cat poop
Why your dog eats cat poop (and then any other feces that are offered) are regarded as medical and behavior. One or a mix of causes may affect your dog’s poop eating behavior. Some behavior ideas your pet is really a copycat … in other words … a copydog. Like a pup, it might have seen its mother cleaning ‘the nest’ when you eat her very own and also the poop of her young puppies. Your pet might have observed other dogs eating poop (pressure from peers). Your pet Read More...
Gus- long haired dachshund puppy
This little guy came in the other day for his puppy vaccinations. 7 weeks old. 2.2 lbs. Long haired Dachshund. He did weigh 2.3 lbs. before he went pee-pee on the table . . . . On the same day, I found this little gem of a photo on Facebook that was too cute to not share. Thanks to Kayla Parker for sharing her photo. PS for Penske. It looks like we might be getting a therapy laser. Tell your Mom not to load up on laser sessions in the next Read More...

An Ounce 0.4 ml of Prevention Is Worth $1,000 of Cure
When I first met Percy*, he was in serious trouble. The 2-year-old cat came to the emergency clinic exhibiting profound weakness. He was having trouble breathing. His gums, eyes, and skin were pale but tinged yellow. He had a mild fever. His coat was unkempt, and occasional bits of flea feces were present in the fur. Despite his symptoms, he was markedly stressed by his presence in the hospital — he hissed, attempted to scratch and bite (although he was too weak to do this Read More...

Ask a Vet: How Can I Tell Whether My Dog Ate Marijuana?
Dr Barchas, I am very concerned about my 1-year-old Boston Terrier. Last Monday he was playing and romping as he always does; he came in for a nap and went directly into a deep sleep. Two to two and a half hours passed and I woke him for dinner. He was very lazy and droopy-eyed, and very slowly came in the kitchen to eat. He put his head in the bowl and then fell back on his rear. He was completely out of it. My ex-husband spends some time at my house and made a comment about Pinky Read More...

My senior dog is drinking lots of water. Is it just old age?
No matter what age your pet is, a noticeable increase in water intake (drinking) or urination often means there is an underlying medical problem. Also, a change in urinary habits, such as urinating in the house or where the pet sleeps, increased urge to urinate, or very dilute urine needs to be evaluated as soon as possible. One exception for loss of house training would be a senior pet with dementia, but other more common medical conditions must be ruled out first. … Read Full Post Read More...
How to Save a Lost Dog
I rescued yet another lost dog here in Houston. In 2011, I rescued almost 20 dogs who had escaped from their homes. I can always tell the difference between and abandoned dog and a lost dog (although, don’t get me wrong, an abandoned dog does feel extremely lost). The dogs look well-fed, taken care of, have a collar on, and a look on their face that is a mixture of, “Oh wow, I can’t believe I’m out in the world! This is so exciting!”, and “Oh wow, I can’t Read More...

Opal- Shar Pei Puppy
Have a nice weekend, everybody. This is Opal. A 11-12 week old SharPei puppy that came in the other day for her 2nd puppy vaccination. We don’t see too many of these around. Her eyes were red and swollen shut, muzzle all swollen, etc. She had to get a shot of cortisone and benadryl. Read More...
