A client brought these two kittens in yesterday. 2 males. She found them on the side of the road. One has a rather nasty looking wound, two wounds actually, on his head. But, it will heal, and he will be fine with a little TLC and antibiotics. They got a bath today, and will look a little better in a few days. I have been thinking up names for them. Frick and Frack. Joe and Moe. Lettuce and Tomato. Bert and Ernie. Punch and Jody. Read More...

Old Dogs Aren’t Acting So Old These Days
Or they shouldn’t be if their owners are taking good care of them. Human life expectancy is rising as medical care, food quality and lifestyle changes make people more adaptive and health oriented. How about your pooch? Still feeding him scraps and preservatives? Still pacifying his desire to play by substituting a fatty, salty snack? Poochie wants to achieve his full potential just as much as you do. Food quality, appropriate supplements and daily exercise make that Read More...

Addison’s Disease
Addison’s Disease is caused by the adrenal gland not producing enough cortisol or aldosterone. It usually affects young to middle-age female dogs, but any dog can develop the disease. Addison’s is rare in cats. Addison’s is difficult to diagnose because sysmptoms mirror so many other diseases – fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting and muscle pain. The adrenal glands produce hormones to help your dog’s body function properly. Addison’s Disease occurs when something Read More...
Iams recalls weight control cat food for salmonella
The FDA announced yet another salmonella-related pet food recall, this time of an Iams cat food intended to help control weight and hairballs in indoor cats. From the FDA press release (and no, it’s not on the Iams website yet, or if it is, I sure can’t find it): The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is voluntarily recalling a small number of bags from a specific lot of one of its dry cat food products due to potential salmonella exposure. No illnesses have been reported, Read More...
Project Scout, er, Sport, er, Spout: Then there were two
Scout, the golden retriever puppy I’ve been watching for friends, goes home to Southern California on Friday. He has been a pleasure to have around, an adorable ball of fluff who’s also smart and outgoing. Scout is going to be a great family dog and a wonderful companion to Ryan, the family’s 7-year-old. Two days ago, Scout was joined by Sport, a flat-coated retriever puppy of about the same age. Sport’s breeder is a friend of mine, and she needed him to get some city Read More...

Of City Dogs and Country Dogs
City dogs know to stay inside the lines and country dogs know how to live large. City dogs have the skills to shop in stores and dine in cafes without a bark. They know to give other dogs casual nods when they pass on the street. Country dogs go outside off leash and stake out their kingdom in acres. Often they have something to say about getting a steak off the grill and have never been to Target. SO, to each his own, but when traveling with your dog to a different environment, Read More...
Fighting Canine Tummy Trouble with Probiotics
Canine probiotics are among the newest supplements for dogs these days. They are just like the human probiotics now common in yogurt drinks, but the beneficial bacteria are canine specific. Canine probiotics regulate all the phases of digestion and help prevent tummy discomfort, especially common stress diarrhea. But wait! Don’t run right out and buy some. And do not substitute human probiotics you can buy for yourself. Humans and dogs just are not built the same no matter Read More...
